Student Led Conference (SLC)*

Taking a wider of Al Jabr Islamic School mission statement in developing and maximing students potential through active, life-long learning and experinces, we have Student Led Conference (SLC) for all students of PYP, MYP, and High School which was held on March 21-23, 2017.

Student-led conferences involve the student and the parents. The students are responsible for leading the conference, and also take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents.... The conference involves the student discussing and reflecting upon samples of work that they have previously chosen to share with their parents. These samples have been previously selected with guidance and support from the teacher, and could be from the student’s portfolio.” (Making the PYP happen: A curriculum framework for international primary education, 2009)

It is actually a time when the teachers do very little talking and let students run the conferences, informing their parents about how they're doing, what their goals are achieving, and what kind of learners they are. Student identifies strengths and areas for improvement which also enables parents to gain a clear insight into the kind of work their child is doing and offers an opportunity for them to discuss it with their child.

On the D day, parents are welcomed to school and given the option of taking the presentation in the classroom, outside the classroom, library, music and dance classroom to continue reviewing and discussing their child's work.

When the SLC ends, we continue the conversation through different lenses of reflection such as: What went succesful and what was not? How will you develop next? What was your parents feedback on your works?

SLC provides an authentic way to present student's progress and to create opportunities for reflection, engagement, and agency.
